Why Yukon Trees Are Different

The forests of the Yukon are shaped by some of the harshest growing conditions in North America.

Long winters, short growing seasons, drought-prone soils, permafrost, frost heave, wildfire and dramatic seasonal changes all influence how trees grow, compete and survive.

The trees we see today are the product of thousands of years of adaptation to these conditions.

Understanding the forces that shape Yukon forests helps us understand why trees succeed, fail, lean, burn, compete and regenerate the way they do.

A tree growing in southern British Columbia experiences a very different life to a tree growing outside Whitehorse.

Many Yukon trees must survive:

For much of the year, Yukon trees are not growing at all.

During winter, trees enter dormancy. Water movement slows dramatically, metabolism decreases and tissues become more resistant to freezing.

Some species increase sugar concentrations within their cells, effectively creating a natural antifreeze.

When spring finally arrives, trees have only a short period in which to:

  • Produce leaves and needles
  • Capture sunlight
  • Grow roots
  • Produce wood
  • Store energy
  • Prepare for the next winter

This short growing season is one reason many Yukon trees grow slowly compared to similar species farther south.

The Gift Of Endless Summer Days

Although Yukon summers are short, they are also unusually bright.

Near the summer solstice, trees may receive almost twenty hours of daylight.

This allows them to photosynthesise for much longer each day than many southern forests.

In effect, Yukon trees compress much of their annual growth into a relatively short period of intense productivity.

The result is often slow overall growth, but exceptionally dense wood.

When people think of northern forests, they often imagine endless moisture.

In reality, large areas of the Yukon receive surprisingly little precipitation. Some regions are closer to a semi-arid climate than people expect.

This creates challenges for trees. Water becomes one of the most important limiting resources in the forest.

Trees compete constantly for moisture stored within the soil. During extended dry periods:

  • Growth slows
  • Defences weaken
  • Insect attacks become more likely
  • Wildfire risk increases
  • Tree mortality rises

Most of a tree's life happens below ground.

The visible tree above the surface depends entirely on the health of the soil beneath it.

A healthy forest soil contains:

Together they form a living ecosystem.

The condition of the soil determines how much water, oxygen and nutrients are available to a tree.

One of the most misunderstood facts about trees is that roots need oxygen.

Roots do not simply absorb water. They also breathe.

When soil becomes compacted or waterlogged:

  • Tree stability decreases

Many tree problems begin years before symptoms appear in the canopy.

Beneath every healthy forest lies an extraordinary partnership.

Many Yukon tree species form relationships with specialised fungi known as mycorrhizae.

The fungus colonises the tree's root system. The tree provides sugars. The fungus provides water and nutrients. Both benefit.

These fungal networks dramatically increase the tree's ability to access resources within the soil.

They are one of the reasons forests are often far more resilient than individual trees growing alone.

Frozen ground

Permafrost & Frost Heave

Many Yukon forests grow on ground that is frozen for much of the year.

In some areas, permafrost may remain frozen year-round beneath a shallow active layer of soil.

This has enormous implications for tree growth. Roots often cannot penetrate deeply. Instead they spread outward near the surface.

This creates forests with relatively shallow root systems.

As the ground freezes and thaws, soil movement can slowly alter root systems, change drainage patterns and influence tree stability.

Many leaning trees owe their appearance to decades of gradual ground movement.

A leaning tree is not always a dangerous tree.

Trees constantly adapt to changing conditions.

A tree may lean because of:

  • Frost heave
  • Permafrost movement

Most trees are perfectly capable of surviving without human assistance.

Occasionally, however, a tree has particular value because of its location, appearance or personal significance.

In these situations, there are steps that may improve long-term health. These include:

  • Proper watering
  • Nutrient testing
  • Addressing deficiencies
  • Protection from mechanical damage
  • Proper pruning
  • Avoiding soil compaction
